The Mississippi River and Tributaries Project (MR&T), the nation’s first comprehensive flood control and navigation act, provides protection for more than 5 million people that live in the Lower Mississippi Valley and since its creation in 1928, has saved many lives, communities and billions of dollars in property.
The unrelenting spring storms have caused some of the greatest flooding seen since 1937 in the Mississippi Delta region – spanning from northeast Missouri all the way down to the Gulf of Mexico. Current estimates are that the MR&T prevented approximately $60 billion in damages. However, as a result of the flooding, the MR&T has been significantly compromised, with estimates around $2 billion dollars in damage to the system.
Save the Delta is a grassroots effort to encourage Congress to quickly provide the federal funding necessary to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and other federal and state agencies to repair the levees, ports, navigation channels, road, bridges, and other vital infrastructure so that those devastated by this year’s flooding can rebuild and restore their lives and livelihood.
We invite you to join our efforts. The flooding has national implications on our economy, society and environment. Whether you live in the region impacted or not, we ask that you send a message to our decision makers in Washington, D.C., so that they know how important it is to rebuild this region.
